Vilignat puts very little time into his comments, they are knee-jerk trollsnark, often with zero relevance to context. Shitposting. The kind of stuff that normally will get you banned on any forum with any sort of serious purpose. Reddit has subs with very low moderator supervision, if any. His Reddit profile shows, now, total focus on attack. He's attempting to suppress the reading of response, by claiming that coldfusioncommunity.net is a honey pot, to lure in unsuspecting naifs and . . . and what? So I'm going to pour over megabytes of access logs to notice that an IP read the blog and . . . I'll organize a DOS attack on that server? What? Attack my readers? Just because they read the blog. If they left trolling comments -- or if I was insane and they left sincere comments that I interpreted as attacks -- what would I do? However, if they leave evidence that they are attacking and harming others, I might dig up that evidence and use it.
Now, what I've found, it's become a near certainty, is that very few people are reading Vilignat and fewer give him any credence. But he can still create trouble, because there are reactive mods and admins who really don't care about evidence, poke them, they will jump to conclusions that serve the naive model in their heads.
This page was created to respond to the issues Vilignat raised. At 72 comments, I stopped individual responses, offering to answer any questions from real people. The only comments have come from Oliver Smith or a troll. All crazy stuff.
Vilignant continued his trolling, it is now at
143 additional comments. So I started making a generic reply, so it's easy and automatic. Vilignant posts trolling accusation, I reply with
Reply. Or if he brings up the honey pot story, it's a specific
Reply on archive.is. I don't know how many are reading these. But it doesn't matter.
That activity satisfies the instinctive Do Something, Fight or Flight that is a natural reaction to trolling. Simply ignoring it works with short-term trolling, most trolls go away. Vilignat is not like that.
He is a dedicated troll who has been successful for many years, he created the story of Jeff Merkey Internet Loon . . . and it was believed, because Merkey was being attacked by a whole community of Linux fanatics, some of whom were vicious, and Merkey did over-react, making him an easy target.
Case in point:
The Book page on Merkey is almost entirely Vilignat snark, taking every semi-fact about Merkey and distorting it into utter preposterousness. Merkey was obviously very intelligent, what is loosely called a "polymath." Another expression is "jack of all trades, master of none." Most of the original comments from Merkey on which the snark was based are unavailable, but what was presented as ridiculous very likely had a non-ridiculous core.
I saw the same on Wikipedia Review about my cold fusion work. "Nuclear reactor in his kitchen!" Total misrepresentation, based on my design of a kit to replicate an experimental finding from the U.S. Navy SPAWAR group, that might generate a few neutrons. Very few. Not dangerous in the least. Not a "reactor." Purely an experiment, and easily affordable. I abandoned that work when I realized that even though it was published in mainstream journals, it was having no impact at all, and it was a one-trick pony. No useful correlations. (It's been continued and there is some possibility I might put more kits together, the original people are now optimizing neutron production and using uranium wire as a cathode and as a neutron amplifier, work sponsored by the U.S. government. I'd try the experiment with a uranium salt in the electrolyte, to be plated on the cathode, underneath a palladium layer co-deposited with deuterium. I have all the materials except the uranium salt, which is easily obtained. Or not. I still don't consider it a priority. Reaction mechanism remains unknown.)
The critical community is infected with hatred and a few haters who stir it up. It's also the same almost everywhere. The problem is not the haters, the problem is the rest of us. I cite
[[meatball:DefendEachOther]] here, and the response was "meatball wiki is for losers." Blatant trolling and actually irrelevant. However, to be sure, the comment appears to have been deleted. But trolling will continue unless confronted by the community.
