Facebook/Meta writes an AI--to fix Wikipedia

Post by ericbarbour » Mon Jul 11, 2022 11:59 pm

https://techcrunch.com/2022/07/11/meta- ... wikipedia/
And just five days ago, Meta announced that Wikipedia editors were also using a new AI-based language translation tool that it had built, so clearly there is a deeper relationship there.
https://ai.facebook.com/research/no-lan ... world-apps
The technology behind the NLLB-200 model, now available through the Wikimedia Foundation’s Content Translation tool, is supporting Wikipedia editors as they translate information into their native and preferred languages. Wikipedia editors are using the technology to more efficiently translate and edit articles originating in other under-represented languages, such as Luganda and Icelandic. This helps to make more knowledge available in more languages for Wikipedia readers around the world. The open-source NLLB-200 model will also help researchers and interested Wikipedia editor communities build on our work.
Hope it handles Scots.....

Furthermore, $100 sez some shithead administrator will see a Meta AI bot fixing content, and block it as a "vandal". Then revert EVERY change it made. It's happened before with automated editing.

Using AI to edit Wikipedia

Post by Kumioko » Tue Jul 12, 2022 8:51 pm

Today there are stories trending about meta using AI to modify Wikipedia.

One link here:https://gizmodo.com/meta-ai-wikipedia-c ... 1849166322

A couple problems come to mind.

- does the wikipedia community even want this? In the past theyve berm resistent to this sort of thing

- does this work on other languagesbor just ENWP?

- AI usually is developed USING wikipedia's already bissed, open source data. So the AI basically maintains the existing bias?

This may seem like a good idea but more likely thime community is going ton ban this bot before to long.

Update 07/13/22 at 10:50 a.m. ET: This article was amended to add statements from a Wikimedia representative clarifying that Wikipedia is not currently using this tool and there is no formal partnership between either organization.
One of my many bones with Wikipedians is that "You can lead a Wikipedian to fact, truth, and logic but you cannot make them think."

How many people off the street, and editing Wikipedia, have taken university courses in logic and critical thinking?

As part of my banning, for the crime of disruptive editing, I dared ask a few questions;

Did you read what I was saying?
Did you think about what I was saying?
What main-point is important?

Formative to me;

Apparently, even Mark Twain was familiar with how Wikimedia works too.

When I visited Samuel Clemens home in Hartford, CT I found that he was both enthralled and frustrated by the telephone. Frustrated to the point where he kept a complaint log on the walls of the closet where his telephone was housed.

Unlike the Telephone of the 1880's Wikipedia provides seamless and ubiquitous chatter and communication; like the telephone most of the things discussed will prove out to be both impermanent and irrelevant.

Thats cool, I've never been there. Makes me wonder what he would think about the likes of Twitter snd Facebook. I already know what he would think of Wikipedia because if he tried to edit they would block him.
