Thoughts on “Observations on Wikipedia behaviour” by Wolfgang Antandrus Mozart?

Post by CMAwatch » Wed Jul 22, 2020 7:24 pm

Wolfgang Antandrus Mozart (beautiful user page, by the way), a long-term (long as in 2004) sysop, has written an essay that is >13 years in the making:

Observations on Wikipedia behavoiur.
(Shortcut: WP:OWB)

His essay has only been viewed 214 times during the last 30 days, but I guess it could have been thousands per month during the early 2010s.
49. The highest compliment a troll can pay to you is to create an attack page about you elsewhere on the internet. It's as close to an admission of surrender as you will get, in addition to showing that you are doing something very right indeed. As in on-wiki trolling, the insults they choose tell you more about them than about you. Consider such pages to be monuments to your good work, but otherwise ignore them.
I wonder if he is referring to actual trolls or anyone who states reasonable criticism.
In the latter case, this point is cognitive dissonance mixed with insecurity.
Also, how exactly is creating an attack page (whether he refers to actual baseless attacks or reasonable criticism) an admission of surrender? Doesn't explain.
18. As soon as someone attacks the community, or any portion of it, by writing a rant on their user page, Act V of their Wiki Tragedy has begun. It will end, inevitably, with their departure or expulsion from the project.
I think they consider reasonable criticism as attacks. Remember how so, so many users who criticized Bbb23 were downright censored? Last month, Bbb23 has finally got what he deserved after years of suppressed criticism.

Speaking of censored,
1. When someone complains loudly about censorship, you may be certain they are up to no good.
It depends on the context. Again, mentions no examples.

Antandrus is a VERY low-profile insider who cut back on editing in 2011. I didn't even bother to profile him for the book wiki. Wish he'd stick to classical music and the oil business......in recent years he's done some deletionist patrolling. Not much else. He has a PhD in music composition and I wish he'd find something better to do than being a Jimbo fanboy.

https://xtools.wmflabs.org/pages/en.wik ... /Antandrus

Someone posted an incoherent rant about him last year:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1333

Let's see.....he lives in Santa Barbara, probably gainful-employed in the petroleum business, PhD in music, fan of Luzzasco Luzzaschi (v. obscure composer) because that was the first article he worked on in 2004. One could probably dox him with time and patience--assuming he's worth the trouble.

Emotionally invested

Post by CMAwatch » Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:46 pm

62. There will be world peace, and the lion will lie down with the lamb, before banned users realize that they have only themselves to blame for being banned. All campaigns referencing "corrupt admins" and "cabals" arise from this same inexhaustible source of folly: I can't possibly be wrong – all of them must be.
And what about Aron Manning, who got blocked by triple-B twenty-three for one paragraph of reasonable criticism? Nah, Bbb23 can't possibly be wrong. OOPSIE! Now he lost CheckUser. Who will undo his damage now?

Obviously, as a long-term editor, Wolfgang Amadeus Antandrus is highly emotionally invested into Wikipedia.

Joined in 2004, administrator since 2005. If he were soon to become a buerocrat, I would not be surprised.

WJBscribe even resigned in June 2019 due to the WMF's lack of transparency on Tram's ban.

“Tone-deaf to irony”: Bbb23

Post by CMAwatch » Wed Sep 23, 2020 2:03 pm

62. […] I can't possibly be wrong – all of them must be.
While this may be true for some users, the same can be said about administrators such as Bbb23.

He thought he could not possibly be wrong. Then he got hit by the irony of fate.

Bbb23 is:
73. […] invariably tone-deaf to irony.
13. As the primary job of Wikipedians is to write the encyclopedia,
But Bbb23 has been interfering with the writing and deleting much quality content contrary to the encyclopedia's advertised purpose:
13. […] any user whose principal activity is to interfere with the writing
but thankfully, he is now
13. […] removed from the project, as painlessly as possible

I don't know much about your conflict with him, but I have noticed something strange:

An account I presume you have created is listed as locally (non-globally) blocked on English Wikipedia on CentralAuth (meta URL), but the block notice is not visible locally.

Anonymity is to cowardice what Viagra is to impotence.
Wow. I could not agree more!

This is an excellent quote.

I hereby thank Wolfgang Amadeus Antandrus for this excellent quote.

It describes Bbb23 perfectly.

Essay by Antandrus Vivaldi got shared on YCombinator after June 2019 Tram crash

Post by CMAwatch » Sat Oct 10, 2020 4:26 pm

After the tram built in 2007 crashed in June 2019, Antandrus Vivaldi's work got published on YCombinator. Not sure whether there is a corelation, but it could be.

The title claims it is from 2008, but actually it was created in 2006.

This sharing on YCombinator lead to a significant peak in views, 9845 in a day, which is more than a third of the total views (25876) it got since July 2015, when WMF sites were deployed with that XTools view counter statistics feature.

Not sure how many views it got before that, but the first time it was shared on Twitter was 2014. One confirmed tweeter shared it in January 2015.

Observations on observations on Wikipedia behaviour

Some vandal out there spent new decade's eve 2010 not partying but vandalizing Antandrus Vivaldi's work.
172.130.70.79 wrote:if you undo this your gay
I guess that's where this comes from:
Antandrus Vivaldi wrote:One of the commonest kinds of vandalism is an assertion that something, someone, or somewhere is "gay". This is a reflection of the common, indeed unavoidable, sexual insecurity of male adolescents, who make up most of Wikipedia's vandals.
Observations on Antandrus
I also have noticed that nearly 10% of Vivaldi's last 500 edits (since early 2020) are related to that Projects/George Reeve/Ljupco guy.
Antandrus Vivaldi wrote:The only one-hundred-percent certain way to get rid of a troll is to close the browser tab. Takes a mouse click. Hard to do though, isn't it?
Something must have traumatized Ljupco so much that he (what it seems like) spent more than a decade attacking Wikipedia from hundreds of accounts and IP addresses. Or maybe competing with Monthandme. Just my two cents.
03:58, 9 February 2010 Antandrus blocked Antandruswillpay with an expiration time of indefinite (account creation blocked, email disabled, cannot edit own talk page) (yeah, I'll probably owe the IRS this year too)
My advice for Ljupco (constructive criticism): To be taken more seriously, you should consider working on your language and spelling.
Use fewer exclamation marks and Jason-Scott style UPPERCASE SCREAMING!!!! which sounds immature, as if a 10-year-old wrote it.
Regarding you made your first Wikipedia edit in 2005, you should be at least around the age of 25 by now.

------

From Vivaldi's global user page:
I sincerely hope is that my work here--as well as that of the thousands of other editors who have worked on the project--has served, and will continue to serve as a useful resource for anyone who searches for information, and who does not want that information to be hidden in a vault, kept behind a lock and key, or maintained by High Priests of Knowledge with nobody's interests but their own in mind. Knowledge is still power, and has been for thousands of years: let the power be free.

"Information wants to be free" has finally grown up, or so I sincerely hope.
I don't know where Antandrus Vivaldi is on Wikipedia's inclusionist/deletionist spectrum,

But if he “does not want that information to be hidden in a vault, kept behind a lock and key”, he should expectedly be against absurd deletions.

FWIW I would not trust "Hacker News" to actually be "news" of a trustable, factual nature. Many of the regulars there are complete twitching Aspie wack-doodles. AS I said before, millennials think WP is magical, and HN is full of them.

Do some searches of past mentions (you will need a search engine, because Ycombinator makes it VERY difficult to find old content directly). For the past 15 years most of the Wikipedia related posts have been either love letters, or craphead insiders bitching about how "no one loves them" or something. But even HN now routinely runs complaints about the WP "culture".
