And I will bet that the vast majority of those URLs get little or no traffic every year.....

you're right, or in cases like the Scottish wiki thats been in the news recently, a lot that have 1-5 editors, are biased, etc.

I think the lesser active half of the public WMF wikis are just stored on a single hard drive (+ backup) on the WMF data centers, and served by a single server computer.
