Section 230 is in trouble -- at last !

Because no one else is doing it--not even the media.

Today a relative almost quit his job after accepting an offer for a fake-scam remote job offered up on Linkedin. He filled out a job application, spoke to someone in human resources, looked at the real company website, interviewed with the person hiring him, and signed a contract complete with an NDA and non-compete. The scammers had cat-fished a real company and they hijacked the identity of a real executive; both the company and the executive were legitimate and searchable.

and all this is totally allowable on Linkedin - thank you section 230.

This kind of nonsense has been going on for a long time and Linkedin's policy is "the honey badger doesn't care" because they are hosting content and therefore not responsible for anything.

It is really a great thing to run a major website and have no responsibility for content!

Do some more reading on LinkedIn's founder Reid Hoffman. Democrat or not, that guy is obviously a sociopath. Which helps to explain his success in the venture-capital world. He sold LinkedIn to Microsoft, so now we can blame THEM for any abuses.

But don't look at his Wikipedia article, because it is a blatant example of paid editing.

A paid article for sure but it - seems he moved onto the Microsoft Board and now is funding AI ventures left and right.

EB I am so out of the "work-o-sphere" I did not even notice (or care) that Linkedin was sold to Microsoft.

I felt Linkedin is even more of a bad idea for a free society than Wikipedia for a variety of potentially career ending reasons.

You are very right. The list of abuses on LinkedIn is long and ugly. And rarely discussed. Employers can be lazy bastards and would love to have employees handed to them on a golden platter, without have to do any "actual work" to find good ones. So it's easier to scrape thru LinkedIn or social media instead of doing their "jobs". And if you get banned from LinkedIn for any reason, you become a non-entity to many employers.

I've never made a LinkedIn page and refuse to deal with them. Not that I would work for any of those companies anyway.

Go to techdirt.com and search for LinkedIn articles. Loads of rotten shit will appear, going back to 2005. Very ruthless company.

Very ruthless company.
Linkedin is a small part of the "cradle to grave" institutionalization of both finance and life that presently exists.
Wikipedia and Linkedin are institutional monopolies-oligarchies that dominate an all or none game in their respective segments.

Here in retirement-land folks managing our community (poorly) and running a golf course proudly display "certification letters" after their names. LCAM, CCM, PGA These folks think they are Kelly Brackett, M.D., F.A.C.S.,A.C.E.P of emergency room fame!
All community association manager applicants must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 hours from an approved pre-licensure education provider within 12 months prior to the date of passing examination. <-say cheese and idiot please
To become a PGA Member, you'll need to become a registered Associate before completing the PGA Professional Golf Management (PGA PGM) Program–an award-winning educational program designed for aspiring PGA Professionals that focuses on the People, the Business and the Game.

The PGA Golf Management University Program, accredited by The Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA), is a college degree program designed to attract and educate bright, highly motivated men and women to service all aspects of the industry and produce PGA Members. <- say four look at birdy while you rape me financially and fuck my skull
In the "good old days" you did stuff and learned stuff on your own (from house painting, electronics, computers, finance, and then low barrier special interest stuff like managing a golf course - you did stuff because you liked doing stuff - no resume tracked online and no "certifications" or degrees to be a dog catcher.. Even a profession like a Physical therapist was a Bachelors degree and now is a doctorate with certifications https://www.apta.org/your-career/career ... tification) Linkedin is needed to keep track of this all-y'all nonsense from cradle to grave.

"In the good old days" you did not have to pay someone to become a "certified idiot" as you could be an idiot all on your own without any help whatsoever.

In our brave new world, You need "certified idiots" to take out student loans, take car loans, take out home loans, pay twice the per-capita cost of healthcare in developed countries, and then be milked vas a cash cow in the retirement industry. Funny you don't need a certificate to edit Wikipedia you just have to be certifiable.

Eight months after the last update:

"The Internet Archive also reached a confidential settlement with book publishers."
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/202 ... e-records/
So they settled (back in March actually)--or did they?
https://blog.archive.org/2023/08/11/our ... from-over/
Ah ha, there was a "consent decree".
https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/14/ ... /?td=rt-3a

And now the record companies are suing them. Over material digitized off ancient 78rpm recordings.
It targets the Internet Archive's "Great 78 Project," which was launched in 2006.
It appears the record companies didn't notice the project for SEVENTEEN YEARS. And as usual, they claim the Archive "financially benefits" from the recordings. Bastards suing other bastards?

While the RNC could eventually take this to a higher court, it faces a tough road in Calabretta's courtroom. Even if Google weren't entitled to Section 230 immunity, all of the RNC's "claims would still be subject to dismissal because they are either not a claim upon which relief can be granted, or because Plaintiff has failed to establish it is entitled to relief," Calabretta's order said.
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/202 ... am-filter/

That's what 230 does "for" us; it protects Google from frivolous lawsuits. To hell with the users. We are nothing.

I suppose this is tangential but any thoughts on Meta blocking links to Canadian news outlets because they don't want to be forced to pay for something that users are posting at will?

From what I understand users are still free to post links but those links cannot be shared through any mechanism on Facebook because that would constitute Facebook becoming the publisher and therefore liable for the fees.

They are deadly serious about blocking news outlets in Canada. Even if it kills people.

And that's not the least of what the Zucc Slime Army does. The following just ran a couple hours ago.

People love to bitch about Musk. But Lord Elon is just a very aggressive attention seeker as well as an "average" valley sociopath. As I've said before, I suspect Zuckerberg is loads worse--partly because he's so damned secretive. The kind of guy who can personally watch thousands of people die in agony, right in front of him, and calmly go "where's the upside for me?" And then order his minions to censor Meta websites of all mentions thereof. He'd make a great Mongolian warlord.

The valley has always been a "happy place" for ruthless pirates and liars. But this current batch is over the top, like a bunch of literal cartoon villains. Remember Vinod Khosla and his bloody beach?
